    Default Potential Cold Calling Scam

    *** WARNING ***

I mentioned some time back about a potential cold calling PC repair scam.

I have been monitoring these operators from an Irish perspective & it appears that these people have indeed managed to scam many users here in Ireland. I'm sure these people are operating in many other areas too?

This is the original post from another forum here in Ireland that first brought this to our attention.

    Courtesy of: Boards.ie

Just got a phone call on my home phone from an Indian sounding guy climimng to be from "Online pc Doctor"

He said he's ringing all windows xp and vista customers with regards to a system crash and told me to turn on my pc while he checks it for me!!!

I told him I'm on windows 7 and he said its all windows systems and they are certified to carry out this work by Microsoft!!!!

There was a delay on the phoneline so I presume he was calling from abroad.
He seemed genuinely shocked when I told him I'm not interested in him helping me and I wouldn't turn my pc on.

How weird is that whole phone call?
Anyone else get one or hear about one of these calls before?

I also got a cold call from Eircom 15 minutes before hand, I must be on some poxy list.
I am now posting this again in order to forewarn all our users wherever they may be to be alert to this scam attempt.

The culprits trade under the name of "Online PC Doctors"

These people contact you out of the blue and are extremely persistent in so far as they keep on calling back until they are successful in their attempts to scam you regardless of how profusely you rebuff their offer to assist you with your supposedly infected PC issues.

It has been suggested that these scammers have purchased large user databases from legitimate companies users have been subscribed to.

The well established legitimate computer security software provider "Symantec" have recently taken the unusual step of contacting these people under the pretense of having a PC that is running slow.

They used an Irish based individual & both recorded and screen captured the whole event.

You can watch the outcome now for yourself to get a better understanding of what these individuals are at and make sure that in the event you receive such a call? that you hang up straight away & do not allow yourself to get drawn into conversation of any sort with these unscrupulous individuals.

I have a friend who was innundated by one such person G-man, said that he was an on-line doctor and that she had a problem with her anti-virus programme (BullGuard) - i had a look at her laptop and there was nothing wrong with it, and also did an internet search to see if bullguard had been compromised which it hadn`t been.
He was very very persistent and called on and off for about 2 weeks until she lost her head and told him to %$&** off!
he got the message after that.
