When you connect your iPod to a new machine, it needs to register that iPod to that machine.

Normally if you don't stop it from automatically Syncing, it will erase your iPod during the Sync.

In your case I would think that you may be goosed hill

I know it's a bit late now but there's a great free App called "SharePod" & it allows you to backup your iPod to a secure location on your PC & even allows you to import that backup back into iTunes on a new machine. You should bookmark it for future reference.

If your 700 songs were originally in your "My Music" folder? then they would still be there & you could import them to iTunes again & Sync the iPod. However, if all your songs were imported directly from CD's to iTunes? it's game over I'm afraid.

That's been my experience with them anyway.

That is one of the major gripes I have with iTunes, it will list all your duplicates but gives you no ability to remove them without doing them one by one manually, a crazy setup in this day & age.

Just another TIP for future reference:

How do I stop the iPod from auto syncing when connected to iTunes?

If I auto-sync, I'll lose some of the music that's only on my iPod!

While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys. This will stop the iPod from auto syncing with iTunes.

Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted and iTunes appears.

Right click on the iPod icon in iTunes' source column and select iPod Options, and then check the box that says "Manually manage songs and playlists".

You can now manage your library manually without losing any songs on the iPod.

    Just a thought Hill?

You said you were using a new Laptop?

Do you still have the machine the music was originally on?

Here is the link to SharePod that Gman had posted in the past.
