Brand new 3 room set up

Hi all,

Ive moved house and renovations well underway now onto getting back up and running with some decent TV set up and would appreciate pointing in the right direction from the good guys on here....

Ive had satellite cables ran into 3 rooms (lounge, kitchen/diner bedroom) and would like to get sky channels ran into each. I only have a wired internet into the lounge.

A friend mentioned multi room gifts but Ive read bad feedback on this site about this optionm.

I currently own a skybox from previous property which came fully set up to just plug in, Im not so tech patient so not the best at tinkering to set stuff up but is it a decent option to keep this.

Can anyone recommend the best equipment to buy given the above. I guess what Im thinking now is a decent reliable good quality plug and play if this exists.

Many thanks in advance...

Oh PS - I currently only own one pretty naff old 32 in TV and an even smaller one (think flat screen version of old "portables" from my mams spare room... but will upgrade in time... :)

get enigma 2 type box`s for the rooms, like a zgemma h2s
do you have 2 sky cables running into each room for twin tuners ( so you can record a different channel whilst watching another one )or do you have just 1 cable running into each room
you can use homeplugs to get the internet connection which each box would need rather than run Ethernet cable from your router to each box ( you would need 1 homeplug for the router and then 1 homeplug for each box )
pm`d you a supplier who offers solid multi-room

Thanks very much for this Jagsy.

Very annoyingly the installer only fitted one cable into each room when I intuitively assumed he would fit 2.

not sure whats involved installation wise to double up but I would potentially do this in future...or is it essential to get this done before I but the hardware?

you don't need to do it before you get hardware as if you bought twin tuner box`s for each room like the h2s you could just use 1 of the tuners on the box
you would only need 2 feeds per box if you wanted to record a channel whilst watching another channel
I have 1 box downstairs and 3 box`s upstairs in bedrooms.. I only record on the one downstairs so that has 2 feeds running to it but the ones upstairs I only have 1 feed running to each box
they all get there internet connection from homeplugs and I use 1 line on all the boxes ( multi-room ).. I don't have any problems with my setup

I'd advise to use home plugs rather than a WiFi dongle for each box. get less lag and freezing with them

Also look at zgemma h.s boxes if only have one line coming into a room

Hi Jagsy,

On your set-up, how is the TV feed signal supplied to the three boxes upstairs bedrooms? I have a zGemma H2S in the downstairs living room. I have two cables coming in to this from my satellite dish (so I am able to record one channel whilst viewing another). My house has (old/2007?) regular coax cable running through the walls connecting the bedrooms back to that central point in my living room where my zGemma H2S is located. Is it possible to send on the satellite signal using this old 2007 coax to the upstairs bedrooms? I think I have read that the third connector on the back of the zGemma H2S can forward on the satellite signal (or am I wrong there). Appreciate any informative replies, thanks!

each box would need its own feed running straight from the dish, if the lnb on the dish does not have enough feeds you can always get an lnb with more feeds on it

I have 2 h2s boxes installed, both have two feeds and share the same hdd over the network so if I record on the bedroom box I can watch it in the living room and visa versa. Wifi is not great for this but home plugs or ethernet cable works fine.

You don't need to add a 2nd feed from your dish to the boxes but just remember you won't be able to use both tuners (record one and watch another etc) if you get twin tuner boxes, however if you plan to get 2nd feeds installed at some point and your budget allows then you might as well get twin tuner boxes from the start.

I went from the Openbox to a zgemma H2S, and although it may not be the best box on the market it is great value for money and simple to use.

Hi Grog68. I presume when you are saying that I "Don't need to add a 2nd feed from your dish to the boxes" you are emplying that since I have two feeds off my current one dish, I can divert one of these feeds to an upstairs box and have only one feed to the living room/downstairs box (as a workaround for my current one dish/2 feed situation). Would that be right?

Also, you say you your two boxes share the same hdd. How is this done, how are the the two boxes connected to the same hdd? Thanks in advance.

Yes, if you only have two feeds from the dish then you could have two boxes each with one feed going to them, but it does mean you would only have the use of one tuner on each so wont be able to record one channel while watching another on one box.

I have my hdd connected to the box downstairs and then the box upstairs accesses it over the network. I do keep a small memory stick in the one upstairs for epg and timeshift etc but all recordings are stored on the HDD downstairs. Check my thread about it at http://www.techkings.org/zgemma-star-h-2s/100073-sharing-hdd-between-two-zgemma-h2ss-how.html

Really and truly if I were you I would think about wiring first. Get the 2 cables you need to each room. And then run a cat 6/or 7 to each room from your Modem/router future proof the whole lot. Do it now if I were you.
