Internet help

After months of putting up with it I'm at my wits ends, I live in an area that can only get 1mbps,yes 1, no Cable or fibre is available. A 4g dongle would be an idea but to use as home internet the cost would be horrific, however my my friend lives about 200 meters away in the same estate with fibre is there any device that could extend his wifisignal to my property ? Thanks in advance

If you are line of site then it would be possible to fire a signal over to you but it will not be as if it came out of his line. If you are in the UK we have higher restrictions on WI Fi signal strengths. However if you have one that will let you set it up as if for the USA it will be not such a problem. It was the only way I could connect two school rooms over a playground.

Yeah i wouldn't expect the full 80mbps off his connection but surely better than the 1mb I'm currently getting there is houses in the way tbh though would it be possible at all ?

This will do the job

[h=1]Wavlink AC1200 Dual Band 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 867Mbps Mini Wireless Router Wifi Range Extender with 4 External 3dBi Antennas Support Repeater and Access Point Modes - Black[/h]

Its called a wifi extender so what the heck has ring mains got to do with it

Firstly some WiFi Extenders use the home plug system and transfer the data over the ring main and then the WIFI extender transmits the signal. This can be blocked at the mains consumer unit. The extender you mention has a range of UP To? "Operating Range Indoor: Up to 100m, Outdoor: Up to 300m.?" Great if you are in an open plan office.

What would then be needed is an external Repeater/Extender at both sites at a height suitable to take blocking buildings etc. out of the way. The 300mbs speed would make no difference to the existing 1 mb Broadband only the network speed. The next factor to this is if the WIFI channel is shared by more than 3 users it can close one of them down, Spreading the signal over a 200 metre distance may not by the time it gets there be much better than what he has now. Plus he would be reliant on his friends connection and security implications that go with that.

Unless Someone has found a way to multiply data I still cannot see how that one plug in extender will do it?

So am I trying to find a product which doesn't really exist :(

It would be possible but not at all cheap. The other option is Satellite Broadband but then you may have a Doppler problem. Then there would be the cost per month! May put the Data sim in a better light though. If you can get enough peeps together and all put in a request for service to Vermin and BT. One may then think it is worth installing fibre. Get the press on it too the big suppliers do not like that and are shamed into service improvements. ;)
