Three men jailed for Lukasz Rzeszutko murder

    Friday, 30 March 2012

A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a Polish man on his way to work in what the judge described as a mindless and savage attack.

Lukasz Rzeszutko was beaten to death while on his way to work in 2010

Martin Morgan from Tonlegee Road in Coolock was found guilty of the murder of Lukasz Rzeszutko on 2 October 2010.

Morgan's cousin Edward Byrne, 21, of Cabra Park, Cabra was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his part in the attack.

Stephen Byrne, 19, of St Donagh's Road, Donaghmede was jailed for six years.

At the Central Criminal Court, Mr Justice Barry White said random attacks on innocent citizens cannot be tolerated.

Justice White said Mr Rzeszutko was the innocent victim of a mindless and savage attack that cost him his life.

The 27-year-old was on his way to work at the Kish Fish factory in the Newtown Industrial Estate in Dublin when he was attacked and killed by three men even though he screamed at them to stop.

Morgan kicked and stamped on his head, the court was told.

Judge White said the jury rightly convicted him of murder and he sentenced him to life in prison.

He also said that if he thought the Court of Criminal Appeal would uphold a life sentence for manslaughter, to which the other two pleaded guilty, he would have no hesitation in imposing it.

Byrne, who has 55 previous convictions and was on bail at the time of the attack, expressed remorse for what had happened.

The court heard that the thinking and reasoning of Byrne was exceeded by 96% of his peers. He admitted to gardaí that the group had attacked Mr Rzeszutko for a “buzz”.

The judge said he was also appalled by the callousness of the behaviour of the three after the attack and said the motive was not robbery but pure gratification.
