Default Dublin City Council to debate Dublin speed limit

    Tuesday, 9 February 2010
Dublin City Council is to debate a motion to drop the 30km/h speed limit in Dublin's core city centre area, amid growing anger among motorists at the restriction.

The motion, proposed by Fine Gael Councillor Bill Tormey, has cross-party support and will be debated at the next full meeting of the authority on 1 March.
Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore has criticised the new limit even though it was brought by his own party councillors.

Yesterday, Dublin Lord Mayor and Labour Party member Emer Costelloe said there is a lot of misinformation about the limit, with many people wrongly believing it covers the whole city centre.

She said the 30km/ph limit was in place in a number of city streets without any difficulty and had been extended to cover an area used by large numbers of pedestrians.

Major arterial routes such as Gardiner Street on the northside and most of St Stephen's Green on the southside are not affected.

just heard this being debated on the radio, was/is a stupid idea in the first place, where on the road pedestrians are being legislated for instead of enforcing current legislation.
the labour counsellor who sponsored this, was very sheepish about this today when this was talked about last week he was very bullish, maybe he got a dressing down from Gilmore????
He now says that it should be put back out to public consultation.
BUT BE AWARE THAT THIS WENT OUT BEFORE AND THERE WERE ONLY TWO SUBMISSIONS, SO IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT THIS, KEEP AN EYE OUT ON Dublin City Council: Roads and Traffic FOR DETAILS
