Man charged with father's shooting

A 19-year-old man has appeared in court in Wicklow charged in connection with the shooting of his father on Tuesday.
Patrick O'Byrne is charged with assault causing harm to his 50-year-old father Seamus O'Byrne at Three Wells Farm, which is outside Aughrim.
Mr O'Byrne was shot in the back and remains seriously ill in St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin.
Patrick O'Byrne was remanded in custody to appear again at Bray District Court his day week.
There was no application for bail and the judge directed that Patrick O'Byrne be psychologically assessed.
The accused spoke briefly three times in reply to questions from the judge.
He told the judge he was not working and that he required free legal aid which was granted to him and the court appointed a local solicitor.
Sergeant Brendan Hobbs gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court when charged Patrick O'Byrne replied, 'I understand the charge'.
