Gardaí in Dublin have launched a murder investigation after a man was shot dead outside a pub in Finglas last night.
43-year-old David Thomas from Cloonlara Crescent died instantly after he was shot in the head a number of times.
The scene where Mr Thomas was shot remained sealed off this morning as garda forensic specialists continue their examination.
The man was shot as he stood outside the Drake Inn pub in Finglas village just before 8.30pm.
A car pulled up, the gunman got out of the passenger seat and shot the victim a number of times in the head at close range.
A car found at the back of St Canice's church in Finglas last night is being forensically examined.
Mr Thomas had been charged and tried but acquitted of the murder of Eamon O'Reilly who was shot dead in another Finglas pub in 1998.
He was also given suspended sentences for shooting Superintendent John Ganley and Detective Sergeant Fergal Patwell at Richmond Hill apartments four days after the murder.
The two gardaí along with Superintendent John Mulligan were later awarded medals for bravery.
Today, gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information on the murder of Mr Thomas to contact them.
