A 16-year-old student has been shot dead after stabbing a police officer at a school in South Carolina.
Scene of school shooting:
The unnamed officer had been sent to the school as part of a safety programme at all state secondary and middle schools.
A spokesman for the Horry County School District said nobody else witnessed the incident at Carolina Forest High School.
School administrators were on campus at the time of the incident and "heard the struggle" between the officer and the male student.
"As a result of the incident, both the student and the school resource officer were injured and were transported to Conway Medical Center," the spokesman added.
"It was reported... shortly after 11:00am by the coroner that the student was deceased."
The high school, which has just under 2,000 students, was closed after the incident, but students were not sent home.
However, parents were allowed to pick up their children if they wished.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.
"We have agents still assessing the situation. We hope to release information as confirmed details are gathered," said a spokesman.
