Hawker Murder Suspect's Facelift Surgery

Images of how the prime suspect in the murder of Briton Lindsay Hawker may look after plastic surgery have been released by Japanese police.

Tatsuya Ichihashi has been on the run for almost three years since Miss Hawker's naked and battered body was found in a bathtub full of sand at his flat in Tokyo.

Officers believe the 30-year-old has had plastic surgery to help him vanish.

The new photograph shows Ichihashi with thicker jaw, lower eyebrows and a protruding bottom lip.

He is thought to have invested in cheek implants and lip-thinning treatments in an operation a fortnight ago, police sources have told local newspapers.

The new picture, believed to have been taken before he underwent the latest surgery, shows he had already undergone extensive changes to alter his appearance.

Relatives of Miss Hawker, 22, previously said they had not been contacted by police about the development.

Miss Hawker, from Brandon, near Coventry, was pursuing her dream of teaching English in Japan.

She was last seen on March 25, 2007, with Ichihashi before her body was discovered on the balcony of his flat.

In a statement, the family said they were receiving reports from Japan that Ichihashi had undergone surgery of some sort in both Nagoya and Osaka but "none of the reports have been confirmed".

It added: "The Hawkers would like to know who the surgeons were, where Ichihashi - the only suspect - obtained the money for the operations and who is hiding him.

"Which hospitals or clinics carried out the work, and why would they operate on a man who is allegedly the most wanted man in Japan?

"It is two years now since Lindsay was murdered and they have never given up hope that he will be caught.

"He has had two years of freedom too long. We are so distressed that again they have been inundated with news via the media, without any official information.

"They would like the police in Gyotoku to contact them and explain the situation properly, so that they know the facts, not just rumours."
