Its freezing here in Cork but lucky for us we didn't have any rain so the roads are not that bad,but in saying that, the secondary are still quite bad.

An extra 19,000 tonnes of grit are being imported to treat icy roads over the coming weeks, the National Road Authority has confirmed.

At least two thirds of the seasonal supply of grit - around 60,000 tonnes - has already been used amid a cold snap which NRA spokesman Sean O'Neill described as a historic event.

Roads in some parts of the country remain in a dangerous condition, particularly on secondary routes and in residential estates.

AdvertisementThere are severe weather warnings in place across most of the country, with Met Éireann forecasting at least another three days of sub zero temperatures.

The NRA says the N5 Charlestown, N6 Loughrea, N8 Mitchelstown, N13 between Brigend and Burt in Donegal, and the N81 Baltinglass are all icy.

The Sally Gap in Wicklow is still closed, and secondary roads and housing estates in most of Dublin are described as treacherous.

In the South, Thurles has been badly affected with gardaí warning of severe black ice in many places.

AA Roadwatch says it is very icy on secondary routes in Co Clare and also on the N18 Ennis Bypass.

In Co Cavan it is very icy in spots on the N3 Dublin/Cavan Rd and in the Baileboro and Virginia areas.

Gardaí have advised motorists to drive with extreme caution on the M7 between J12 Newbridge and J14 Monasterevin, or avoid if possible.

Meanwhile, a man is in a critical condition after a road crash on the N9 Carlow to Kilkenny road early this morning.

Bus Éireann services in Cork were severely disrupted this morning but have since resumed.

Services between Limerick and Dublin which were suspended have also now resumed but severe delays should be expected.

Meanwhile, Dublin Bus services are operating on a restricted basis and services on routes on higher ground and through housing estates are again being limited.

    Latest Update

    Roads gritted but caution urged

    Monday, 4 January 2010 13:24

The National Roads Authority has said gritting is being carried out on many roads but it has reminded motorists not to be complacent.
Footpaths and roads are again very slippery following overnight temperatures of -8C.
As hundreds of thousands of people returned to work following the Christmas and New Year break, commuters woke up to more icy road conditions this morning.

Dublin Bus says services on all routes are operating, although some have been curtailed.
Bus Éireann says the majority of its services are operating to schedule, with only some minor delays and changes to routes.

People travelling to and from Leinster are advised to contact their local office for information on individual services, as all routes remain under review.
Motorists are again being urged to exercise extreme caution and AA Roadwatch has appealed to people to be patient and to plan their journeys.

Secondary routes are described as very dangerous all over the country and some road closures remain in place.
The worst affected areas include Dublin, Kildare, Laois and other parts of the midlands.

Snowfall in Donegal is said to have frozen over making driving conditions off the main roads extremely dangerous.

Gardaí in Cavan and Leitrim say roads there have not yet been gritted this morning and secondary roads are particularly bad.
Conditions have improved on primary routes since the weekend and most have now been gritted but the message is still to proceed with caution.

Meanwhile, local authorities in Dublin say they have to concentrate on gritting main roads to maintain their stocks.
A spokeswoman for Fingal County Council said they are receiving 120 tonnes today but with the freezing weather set to continue council workers will be gritting once a day on national primary routes and airport access roads.

Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown said supplies of grit are low and the authority is concentrating on difficult areas with 11 crews out this morning since at 7am and more expected out this evening.

A council spokeswoman said more supplies are expected later this week.
South Dublin County Council is getting more supplies tomorrow and currently prioritising national routes.

A spokesman for Dublin City Council said its supplies are adequate and more have been ordered.
The National Roads Authority said the M50 has adequate supplies.
More snow is forecast to fall tonight as icy conditions continue to hamper road users.
Met Éireann has said such a prolonged cold spell has not been seen in Ireland since 1963.
