'Best' router for Virgin

I'm looking at replacing (well, modem mode-ing) my SuperHub 3 as it's, well, shite, and I was just wondering which routers people on here might recommend?

Wall thickness isn't an issue, and the house isn't huge so doesn't need to cover acres, but want something with a fairly customisable interface (i.e. can add fixed IPs without faffing about like you have to on the SH3, can add VPN configs etc). There's that many out there that I've no idea where to start looking really.

I was using a cheap fairly ancient Netgear that's now died a death.

Hi i have 2 super hub 3.0 one works great but the other wont when i swap them over it rcognises the hub but wont connect internet although permanent white light any ideas cheers

My lad has got the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 and loves it.
I have an ASUS RT-AC87U and I cant fault it. I like the fact that you can add different OpenVPN configurations files for different countries and then just switch with the press of a button on the web interface. Also like that you can create your own openvpn config which lets you access your own home network without opening ports.

Is this on your router m8, or your lads. as i was going to buy the Asus, but went for the Netgear instead

I was wondering can you just unplug virmin router and plug in any VPN router without porting/bridging or whatever you call it.

Put the virmin router into modem mode the plug in the VPN router to the modem.
Buy a decent VPN router as it will slow down your speed

No, you need to use your SP router for the net m8, and as Dangerous said, you can put it in to modem mode, or just leave it as it is, and use it to by-pass you vpm if needs be...I've got CCTV Cameras that don't need to be on a vpn network, so i ethernet cabled them to my SP`s router, and everything else is running through my vpn set-up
