Adobe (News - Alert) has upgraded Flash Player to a new version, Flash 10.3, with new security enhancements.

According to an Adobe blog post, Flash Player 10.3 gives added security and privacy protection, and offers additional audio and video for enterprises and developers.

Adobe Flash Player 10.3 is available for Android (News - Alert), Linux, MacOS, and Windows, reports Adobe.

Among the new features in Flash Player 10.3 is media measurement for Flash, which gives reports on video content distribution, audience reach, and the amount of video which was played. In addition, there is better quality of audio with “acoustic echo cancellation, noise suppression, voice activity detection, and automatic compensation for various microphone input levels,” according to the Adobe blog post.

Flash Player Incubator was upgraded as well. Also, formerly known as “Molehill,” the Adobe project is now named “Stage 3D.”

“The Stage3D API is a set of low-level GPU-accelerated APIs enabling advanced 2D and 3D capabilities across multiple screens and devices (desktop, mobile and TV),” says the Adobe blog post. “These new low-level APIs will provide 2D and 3D engine developers the flexibility to leverage GPU hardware acceleration for significant performance gains.”

Stage 3D was honored by Computer Graphics World after the Game Developers Conference.

It was also reported that the Adobe update fixes bugs and “vulnerabilities” in earlier versions which led to crashes and increased the risk that a hacker could take over the system, according to a report from Apple (News - Alert) Insider.

“In the past, Mac users often had trouble keeping up with Flash Player updates since the Mac OS and Flash Player ship schedules are not in sync,” Adobe employees Peleus Uhley and Lindsey Wegrzyn said in a blog post reported by Apple Insider. “With this new feature, Flash Player will automatically check each week for new updates and notify the user when new updates are available. This feature matches the auto-update notification capability previously implemented on Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows.”

Users will also be able to clear files known as “Flash cookies.”

Apple has been in an argument with Adobe over the security of Flash. Apple had kept Flash off of devices such as the iPhone. But more recently, Adobe has released a new tool that converts Flash files to HTML5 so they can run on devices such as the iPad and iPhone, according to Business Insider.

Last year, concerned about Apple not having Flash, TMC CEO Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) said in a blog post, “Although Apple's iPhone does a great job approximating a PC-based browsing experience on the go, lack of Flash support which one past high level Adobe employee blames 100 percent on Apple, really makes the phone a lot less useful than it could be.”
