what is the easiest way to tell if the head is cracked or just a blown gasket

its a head of job if the gasket is no good you will be abill to tell but if your in the rac or you know someone they have a sniffer that can tell

the only way to tell if the head is cracked is to have a machine shop either pressure test or magnaflux the head.head has to be off for this.what are your symptoms?

lack of power on hills and pulling off, oil in water, burning oil

might have been a good idea to state what car petrol/diesel as some cars like vw/audi suffer from oil cooler and the oil enters into the cooling system from there,spark plugs caked in carbon,car diagnostics checked for fault codes.?

well at the very least it sounds like the head has to come off and the gasket changed. this is the time to have the machine shop check the head out.

thanks for that, had a look today and going to need special tools to take the head off so is off to the garage I think
