Interior Light dim

Hi All,

I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla (E12 shape).

The other day I decided to tinker with the electrics to install LED lights under the doors so that the lights shine when the doors are opened.

This was working fine but then I decided to further tinker and replace the middle interior light with an LED strip.

The interior light has 3 settings:

Off (means turned off)
Doors (means the ligt comes on only when the doors are opened)
On (constantly on)

The interior light unit is a sealed plastic unit with built in circuitry so I decided to wire up the LED strip to the terminals that connect to the
original bulb so as to not have to tap into or disturb the existing wiring.

While connecting it up, I thought I blew a fuse as there was a spark but after checking them, nothing was blown. So then after testing it again, the light
comes on VERY dimly with the doors setting, BUT when set to ON it comes on full brightness.

Can anyone advise what could cause this? Im thinking there must be a short somewhere that is causing this but im pretty sure the wiring is fine.

Im thinking perhaps theres something in the sealed plastic unit thats has some debris causing a short or something perhaps?
