Windows 8 laptop not reading my portable hard drive

My laptop read my external hard drive perfectly but now it just won't read it. When I try to go on Disk Management it wont load but when the hard drive is unplugged it loads perfectly. Any ideas how to fix?

Have you tried the external hard drive on another laptop or even a desktop pc? What is the make and model of the external hdd?

Sounds like the disk maybe on the way out to me mate. Usually when something is corrupt on the disk I see issues like that (disk manager taking an age to open, or hanging until the disk is removed). like j4v3d says, try it in another computer to double check maybe.
