I would imagine so yes, but depending on where you're going. Some places I've found the pre-paid (o2, EE) ect dongles have a terrible signal :(

I set the box up for him a couple of months ago and not heard from him so it must be working, obviously you may get more freezing depending on the mobile signal. As for the data usage, I don't have a clue I am afraid

I have used a Huawei E173 (unlocked) and a 12 month prepaid 3 Sim with 12GB data allowance for a friend and it worked well. The boxes use very little data as long as you dont stream any services and the sim cards should last the 12 months. The driver for the E713 is available from the drivers section of the plugins. It operates freeze free providing there is a good 3 3G signal.
I got the dongle and sim from evil bay. The reception of UK satelite service outside of the UK could be a problem however and you would have to take into consideration the footprint of the satellite.

you should search the forums !!!! there is a discuion going back a while now that shows how to do it - some people use theirs outside of the uk with no problem whatsoever using a wireless modem and a tp link (not home plugs tp link !!

Hi Alan, this thread is not about the vodafone dongle working in the Open/Skybox types nor is about using a £5 ebay dongle to pick up mifi or tethered phone internet the OP asked about using the 3G dongle directly in a zgemma. Unhelpful comments from other members saying search search don't help either, when I used this setup 16 months ago the only help I could find was from the openATV forum in german and after spending an hour last night searching this forum and google I was directed only back to this thread.
The drivers are available, it is messy but can be done and yes the easiest way is mifi or tethering.
I have contacted philip1960 by pm and offered him a backup build to use.
There is a 3/4G Manager plugin available that can be used, but you need to know APN settings etc that can be found using google.

ermmm, the OP asked abut using his zgemma in a caravan ?? he highlighted one method, other posters included me then offered different solutions that DO work, I know someone who uses his in a caravan OUTSIDE of the UK ! so I am pretty damn sure that it would work in a caravan in the UK - no need for messing about with settings, installing drivers, new builds, back up builds etc. just unplug from home, take it with you and plug it anywhere you can get a signal and dish access.it really is that simple and it actually meets the needs of the OP.
