Pi hotspot

Right our wifi is shite upstairs so I'm looking at making the Pi into a hotspot, which I've had a go at a few guides for. But whenever I've managed to get through the setup, when I connect to it it tells me there's no internet connection (even though the Pi is connected to the internet) - I'm not at home at the moment so can't post any screenshots or run any commands or anything but I can do tonight if anyone has any thoughts?

if you can get cable to the Pi position then why not use an old router as a hotspot?
much easier.

Because I have the Pi connected by Ethernet via a power line adaptor and it's just another thing I'd have plugged in really.
