A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after being badly beaten in her Dublin home this morning.
Gardaí were alerted to the incident when a man walked into Blanchardstown Garda Station and told gardaí that he had attacked her.
Gardaí discovered the seriously injured woman in bed upstairs at a house in Ladyswell Road in Dublin.
She sustained serious head injuries and it is believed she was attacked with a hammer while sleeping.
She was taken to Blanchardstown Hospital.
The man was arrested and is now being questioned at Blanchardstown.
The house has been sealed off for a forensic examination.
Both the victim and the man in custody are in their 20s.
Gardaí say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the assault.
