The oil worker, who has not been named, was working close to a distillation unit at the Lindsey Oil Refinery which caught fire and then exploded at around noon.

More than 50 firefighters tackled the large blaze but the man has not yet been found.

The refinery is run by oil company Total, which confirmed the fire had been contained.

In a statement, it said: "All adjacent units have been safely isolated.

"The roll call is complete and one person, known to be working in the immediate area, is currently unaccounted for.

"The family have been informed of this. Emergency services are continuing to search the area and our main priority is to support them in this task."

The company said two people had been treated for minor injuries.

People living in the area reported hearing a blast and black smoke could be seen as far away as Hull.

For a time, residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed and to stay indoors.

A police spokeswoman said officers were working with the fire service to determine the cause of the fire.

The refinery found itself in the headlines last year when hundreds of contractors walked out in a row about employing foreign workers.

The dispute escalated into a national political storm.

The refinery is the third largest in the UK with a processing capacity of more than 200,000 barrels per day. It started production in 1968.
