    These posts on eBay with over-inflated prices are usually using automatic software to inflate price on low / zero stock

    Yes they use ebay software to inflate prices of stock they don't have, this is to deter sales.
    If you want to buy AA batteries, search ebay and change the search options 'priced high to low' - you will see there's sellers selling one AA battery for £25
    this means they can leave the listing active, then when they get the stock back in, they revise the listing to make it 'one battery 53p' - they don't have to make new listings, just make them astronomical prices
