Hi

My mate gave me his Acer Extensa 5620z laptop to fix - OS not booting correctly. He has windows XP installed - god knows what he has done to it - it goes to the booting option of safe mode, safe mode with networking, start windows normally option screen - tried every one of them - the laptop then goes off - i have tried the DFD Recovery using ALT+F10 and F11 that doesnt seem to do nothing at all - even trying to install my own Windows XP on the laptop wont allow it - i think it said cant find any disk drivers installed or something like that - first time i have come across a problem of this extent.

How can i go about in fixing this? Recovery? Fresh Install?

thanks in advance

Could you elaborate on this a little more? What will it not allow? Are you able to boot the CD and see what partitions are installed on the system?
Dan it boots up my windows xp disk but when it comes to the install bit it says something like disk drive cannot be found and that no OS system found - booting in safe mode doesnt even work either - just freezes and shuts down.here is a photo of the screen when trying to install XP;

even running repair from the windows xp disk wont even do - same error message as shown in the image.

Ah I see. It seems as though that this model comes pre-installed with Vista. I dont know how he managed to install XP on there, but something has gone wrong somewhere, have you considered installing Windows 7 instead? It may just be worth it..

That is what i was thinking - i even used the Vista Recovery disk i had made myself to like repair startups and stuff - when it scanned the HDD said no OS found. How would i go about installed Windows 7 then? I tried inserting the disk and booting from the dvd drive - no luck - i think the disk i have only works once ur logged in to windows and running it from my computer.

Here is the spec of the laptop - will it even take windows 7 - if it does might slow the whole laptop down;

UPDATE: I know this isnt the right way of doing it but at the moment im using a toshiba laptop recovery disk to recover the laptop to Windows Vista and then from there i am going to decide on whether to install windows 7 or go back to xp with a fresh install with all the drivers installed on it. Like i said its like a dirty way of doing it as there will be drivers issues but if it gets the job done in the end then im happy - longer way of ensuring the laptop is back to its old self with a clean install lol

If it will run Vista, then it will run 7 as well.

yup. had a look around and it will install it - going to do that tonight when i get home - god knows what he does to the laptop - well i shouldn't be complaining when im getting paid for it lol

it looks to me like you have a hard disk failier there sys is not reading the hd

looks to me he wiped the whole OS out - battery on laptop is knackered as well - full battery doesn't last 2minutes LOL - so you have to leave it on charge whenever using it.

ya but it still not reading the hd to write to it so its either not conected or its dead i would think dead

its working now - boots up properly - just need to reformat the HDD and then install fresh copy of windows 7 home on the laptop - and voila all done :)

Paid? lol

You will now have to distribute your share to me, ferguj and hadmad. Otherwise you are banned from TK. :)

lol just kidding.

Hopefully its not a dead HardDisk Drive. It sure isn't a new model if it only has 1GB RAM and a processor speed of 1.6Ghz.
