A pilot's incredible escape from a jet crash in Canada (Friday 2010 07 23) has been captured on film and in a series of dramatic photographs.

Captain Brian Bews ejected from the plane moments before it crashed to the ground and burst into flames before an airshow.

Cpt Bews - who was pictured sailing metres above the stricken aircraft in a partially opened parachute - was taken to hospital with injuries.

The CF-18 Hornet combat aircraft was at Lethbridge airport for the 2010 Alberta International Airshow, which takes place this weekend.

Captain Holly Brown said the crash happened during a practice session.

"Obviously, he knew there was a problem and he successfully ejected from the aircraft and he survived," Cpt Brown told the Edmonton Sun.

"He's alive and it's very good news."

Cpt Brown said pilots like Cpt Bews, who is stationed in Quebec, go through rigorous training.

The cause of the crash is so far unknown and there were no more details on the pilot's injuries.

Department of National Defence and transportation department officials are investigating.

Airshow officials said the twin-engine plane is normally used for fighter escort and day and night strike missions.

Cpt Bews has accumulated more than 1,400 flying hours in the military, of which 1,200 have been in CF-18 Hornets, the Edmonton Sun reported.
