Amazon Fire TV - as a simple media player

Hi

to all the knowledgeable specialists and enthusiasts - complete numpty calling you for help and advice.

Im sorry if this has come up before , but I dont tend to visit here too often.

I currently have a Western Digital Live TV player.
Fairly happy with it , but some files wont show subtitles ( will from a USB drive ) , and sometimes it locks up and crashes.
My Win 7 PC has a 6TD HDD with my films on and I use a Power Line network to CAT 5 to the player.
Presently , the only way to get the content on my PC to be searchable on the WD player was to use PLEX , as network shares just hung during setup,

Anyway - back to the point.

I have an Amazon Fire TV that I can read the files on my PC and play them , but whether I use VLC or PLEX on the Fire TV , the search is SO SLOW and clumsy.
This is where the WD player wins , as it is dedicated for this and has a good user interface.

So , how can I get a decent , quick interface on the Amazon box , that will search my PC files quickly , and have a user friendly interface ?
I dont want to cast from my PC to the player .

All suggestions will be tried , but please keep it simple as it took me ages to try and share my PC film files with the WD box , and then the Amazon box.

Or if you have any suggestions for other solutions , then I'm all ears

Many thanks for your help , hope it made sense !

I have 10TB on 3xHDD's attached to a 10yr old iMac, using either plex server or smb (ethernet not wifi) I can run it all on the new 4K firestick without any issues. Plex worvks better than network sharing its much faster , plex android interface is crap , although they have recently updated it I think , however i use kodi and "plexkodiconnect" s, so you get the speed of using plex but with the far superior user interface of the kodi library , skin wise , arctic zephyr2 just released this week set it up with single widget views rather than multi ( firestick may be too slow for multi widgets) , looks fantastic. What are your internet speeds ? if your using the new stick with decent speeds you should be having no issues, I should point out I don't use 4K vids , 1080 is fine for me.
Main TV in house , all family watch on "apple tv box " with plex, netflix, etc . 3x firesticks in other rooms.

Arctic Zephyr2- plexkodiconnect. You can choose alternative "dark" option .

simply install latest version of kodi on the AFTV ( kodi.tv - dpwnloads , choose the one for your device , use version 18.1) , run kodi ( plenty of vids on YT) google "repository plexkodiconnect" download it and add it to kodi via install from zipfile once installed PKC will look for your plex server , follow the prompts and it will add your local content to the kodi library. You then need to change the skin in kodi from default estuary to arctic zephyr2 , if you want more installation info message me.

Hi

I have downloaded the zip file ...repository plexkodiconnect
I have copied it to a blank USB and inserted it into the Fire TV , but cannot upload it.

What am I doing wrong ?

install kodi version 18.1 on the FTV, open kodi , clk on system-addons-install from zipfile- locate the usb then install PKC , Once installed back up once and select install from repo - PKC repo- video addons- PKC and install it then follow prompts. Rather than post everything on here message me if you like.
