Anybody good with boilers?

Anything less is a temporary repair and or bodge.
Certainly if the op wants to do that himself then remember to blank off the header tank, disconnect the cylinder and scrape out the return pipe on the cylinder and the pipe work itself, treat each radiator individually for 30 mins at a time finishing off with a rattling across the face with the rubber mallet and then a thermal image and then flush the system as a whole.
Takes all day hence the labour cost.
I replaced the inlaws prima with a second hand water damaged Worcester junior. Cost £95 for a gas valve.
Took me all day to replace boiler and disconnect header tank, cylinder / alter pipe work and would certainly not do that for £200-300. Combi replacement maybe £500 .
Guess where it was choked before the flush, round about the hw cylinder.
There you go pl1976 based on the information you posted here that's the advice from a heating engineer. Wouldn't use any advice from others on this thread as it's no where near the correct solution and as you said the plumber you got out fixed bugger all but you still had to pay for the privilege.
Engineers have letters after their names, I doubt many gasmen have that,
Please don't devalue the term engineer,
I'm an electrician that specialises in heating controls, so work closely with plumbers and gasmen all the time,
A lot of BG plumbers are actually subbies, and they get commission to upsell jobs.
A power flush in a system boiler should be iro £500 tops. Dependant on area , obviously, London prices are a lot more.

Neither of those companies cover for anything else. No choked pipework replacement or pinholed rads and they're both up north. Read the small print.
You can't compare working on a building site and replacing existing boilers, it's nowhere near the same.

You don't need to have letters after your name to engineer something or a solution.
The plumbing side of bg is run by dynarod. Repair engineers that quote for flushing are direct labour, not subbed so upselling has no effect on the outcome. The only time we need electricians for heating controls is to connect to a fused spur.
The bg quotes are fixed price packages we select. An electrician pricing heating system work ffs. I wouldn't price electrical work as I haven't a clue. That's not my engineering discipline.

Yeah I noticed this little gem:

There will be an additional charge for any variations or additions to the work which you ask for or which we find to be necessary whilst we are doing the work and which could not have been identified when we gave you the original quotation. In such a case, we will explain to you the reasons for the extra work and let you know in advance what the extra cost will be.

And this one:

Where we need to connect new equipment to your existing central heating system, we will not accept liability for the cost of repairing or replacing parts of your existing system which subsequently develops faults in that system unless we have been negligent in not realising that such damage may occur or the way we did the work caused the fault.

and:

Our work is guaranteed for one year from the date that the work is completed. The guarantee only applies to the specific materials provided by us and repairs made by us and does not apply to any further unrelated faults with the system or appliance.

Taken from:

https://www.britishgas.co.uk/content/dam/british-gas/documents/Heating_Upgrades_Terms.pdf

Both up North?

There's a good possibility that the OP with the blocked pipe doesn't live in London. Most people don't

Aye like it's choked hence the quote for the flush. I was wanting to say last week but why do you think the pump was needing turned up. To push through the restriction.
Good luck with your repair and finally it has come to a conclusion for you

P.S let us know what boiler your being offered and I'll tell you if it's shit or not

He's already paid (his insurance has paid really, but his premium will go up as a result) for a repair to a 20 year old system. I said 10 days ago he needed a combi which will remove all or most of the offending (blocked) plumbing.

I think you are living in a dream world.
I work on building sites all the time and all the plumbers I know charge between £150 to £200 a day, so when you say 'charging £300 a day for fitting a boiler' is irrelevant, he charges £180 a day whether he's fitting a boiler or picking his nose.
Just google power flushing prices and only one of the prices is anywhere near £600, all the rest are £300 or less:

http://www.plumbwise.net/power-flushing/#.WWD3lCmAMmw

Power Flushing Costs
A power flush of your central heating system including all the chemicals, power flushed to BS7593 standards will cost £250.00 for up to five radiators and £35.00 per radiator thereafter.

Combi Boiler Systems
up to 7 radiators
inc chemicals and inhibitor
only £200
No hidden extras
200 a day is dirt cheap.im gonna call bullshit on that one with all due respect, unless your plumbers are worlds different than here in canada.here you will pay between 150$ cdn and 200$+ an hour.i do know the exchange between the pound and the canadian dollar as well.if thats a gas boiler, and i assume it is,and it is as old as you say,i dont believe there is any sense in sinking more money into it.i just replaced my gas hot water heater and it was 720.00$ cdn.replacing it myself saved a bit.i know things are different in britain, but holy crap, that is an expensive and complicated system.not meaning to offend here.if im wrong educate me.

All the gas safe plumbers who fit the boilers in the houses we build certify their work.

None of them charge over £200 a day otherwise they'd be sat at home not getting paid.

Some absolute right idiots replying in this thread....i have found it because other plumbers have read it and it is getting passed around on social media...... the answer are quite ludacris and the lack of knowledge is unbelievable.....anniman is spot on........ pabloescaban.....your a complete idiot who clearly knows nothing about plumbing and heating

You're not turning this into an argument?

You joined the forum in the middle of the night and called me an idiot in the only post you've ever sent.

Are you familiar with the definition of the word 'argument'?

I know nothing about anything? - according to annsman, you can't get anyone to fit a combi for £300, and you appear to agree with him.

How is it that there's hundreds of plumbers / installers / whatever the hell you want to call them supplying and fitting combi boilers for less than a grand? - and there's loads around the £700 mark:
https://www.gumtree.com/plumbing-services/uk/boiler+supplied+and+fitted

So if you take their £350 day rate off, they are getting boilers for about £300 each?

Let me guess, rather than go through any points I've made, you're just gonna say something along the lines of...'you're an idiot, you avnt a clu'

It's not a combi swap though is it....its a conversion with a full powerflush and gas run

Well don't I feel silly I actually meant conversion which is what I asked him a swap can be done in a half a day silly me guess you are going to call me a liar now as well as an idiot look forward to your response mwah

yeah so there you go, a worcester costs maybe £900 and you were quoted £2k but i imagine with centre discount your gas man pays less then normal price.
pl1976 aint gonna get that cylinder and pipework removed, new boiler fitted and pipework altered for £300 or £180-£200 like pablo said so youve just contradicted everything you pair were so convinced was a fair price.
Even when i used to do the fitting for a small company i was paid £300 a day for fitting boilers and my partner the same for fitting rads and pipework but that was not for removal of old stuff like warm air units or floor standing boilers. Even the pipework and kit was supplied so the company took £1800 as a flat rate for fitting contracted systems. and that was a days work. Granted we removed the cylinders for free as we took them to the scrap.

So as a conclusion we have a few real plumbers/gasmen commenting on here that your all wrong, anymore arguing is obviously trolling on your part.

Whoa put your wallet away just to clarify when you say boiler is it a combi or system boiler or a copper tank ? Is there any chance you can upload a picture? BG love selling power flushing it costs them nothing as for magnetic gunk where exactly has that come from in a system that is wholly copper and brass...... also is you hot water pressure low or as normal

This is the one that makes me laugh the most. Wrong on every single point but still offering advise. Pl1965 i hope ypur not paying any attention to this
