ATI Radeon HD 5850: Performance Review

A recent article on HotHardware puts the recently released ATI Radeon HD 5850

through its paces, the article benchmarks the card against come close competitors such as the Radeon HD 5870, the Radeon HD 4870 X2, the GeForce GTX 285 and the GeForce GTX 295.

Here are some technical details on the graphics card, it has a 2.15B transistor 40nm GPU, the clock speed of the GPU is 725MHz, it also has 1440 stream processors which enable the card to deliver 2.09TeraFLOPS, it uses GDDR5 memory which has a memory clock speed of 1000MHz, you can see more details here.

Benchmarks included 3DMark Vantage, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Crysis, FarCry 2, Left 4 Dead and Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X, the 5850 is always close on the tail of the GTX 295 however lets not forget that none of these games are DirectX 11 compliant.

All in all the review is pretty impressed by the graphics card, they are especially impressed by the competitive pricing, DirectX 11 support and low power consumption, however they are not impressed as much by the fact it only just outperforms the GTX 295 in some areas, that said when DirextX 11 games are launched this graphics card should excel.
