Mountain rescuers have said there were no witnesses to the deaths

The pair, a 20-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, died instantly after plunging from the famous Dent du Geant peak.

It is thought they were near the summit at a height of 10,500ft when the accident happened.

A spokesman for Chamonix mountain rescue told Sky News Online the most likely cause was "rockfall".

However, Captain Benoit Tonnany added: "We can't be certain because there are no witnesses."

Mr Tonnany said emergency services were alerted to screams at around 10.15am on Monday. A helicopter was scrambled, but nothing could be done to save them.

"It was a huge fall," said Mr Tonnany, adding there had been no reports of poor weather on Monday.

It is understood the man and woman had set off from Chamonix to tackle the peak on Sunday.

Mr Tonnany was unable to confirm where in the UK the victims were from and they have not been yet been named.

The Dent du Geant - meaning Giant's Tooth - is 13,097ft high and runs along France's border with Italy.
