Buying a Satellite Dish

Hi,

I have just moved house and am going to need to install a new satellite dish. My old setup was a Skybox F5 running through a Sky dish and it worked perfectly.

What I am really after is some advice on if there is any particular type of dish I need to buy and how easy is it to install. Would it be better to get someone to install it for me?

Thanks

i would go for something better, what happens if sky goes down=freesat only, motorised or a rack of lnbs for other sats,if people are not prepared to read and research they may get a rude awakening,we dont know what the future brings.

For a fixed dish, a zone 2 dish will set you back about
£25 plus about £10-15 for a reel of coax.

They are easy to set up. Here are a few pointers.

Note the dish doesn't have to be up very high, the signal comes in at approx 45 degrees
from the ground so you can judge the position yourself.

First, if you have a portable you can hook the box up to the portable where you can see it
using extension leads, it's easier than shouting instructions to somebody else.

Or stick the telly volume up really loud so when you get a signal you can here it straight away.

So, just hook the dish up to the box and the box to the telly.

Forget about signal strength at this stage.
Stick the box on BBC1 or another FTA channel.

Make sure the mounting bracket is vertical or horizontal
depending on the style. ( Important !!!Use a spirit level don't guess, also some dishes come with a spirit level
attached to the LNB arm I would recommend buying one of these.)

This bracket mounts horizontally to the wall

This bracket mounts vertically to the wall

If they are not "straight" to the wall you have all kinds of angles to deal with.
First the elevation will be out , the left / right position will
be out and finally the skew (Twist angle ) on the LNB will be out.

Don't let that scare you though, just mount the bracket
correctly and the rest falls into place.

Set the dish up at about 22 degrees elevation (up and down)
there should be some scales on your bracket.Behind the face of the dish.

Have a look where the other dishes are pointing in your road and point it
somewhere near by eye.

Start moving the dish slowly left to right or the other way
if you prefer.

Basically, you will get either a very good picture or no picture at all.
But there will be a bit of lag with the signal to the box so don't go
waggling it round to quickly.

I set a portable one up for my caravan all the time over the summer
as long as it's level it's really easy.

Don't get too bogged down with the "techy" stuff it will drive you
round the bend. There are too many variables.

Ohh ! After a bit of wiggling if you don't get a picture move the elevation down / up by one degree
(should be between about 20ish in the north to about 24 ish down south)

Then do the left to right thing again.

When you get a picture use the signal strength on the box to tweak the dish position if you want, but it's usually not needed.

Don't bother with cheap sat finders they are useless.

Motorised setup is better but will set you back about £300 and probably another £100
for an installer.

Depends what you are trying to achieve and your budget.
