i bought a can of air, as i read somewhere the reason my 3year old toshiba laptop might be running slow is it might need the fan cleaned, so ipurchased said can, do i have to open the laptop, ie remove all the screws in the bottom, or do i just attacch straw to can and spray through vents at side and bottom, love this wee lappy and would'nt want to wreck it by doing it wrong, what do you advise peeps, thanks

Hi eileen,

A fan that needs cleaning would normaly give problems like laptop shutting down, rebooting, or freezing. I'm not saying do not clean the fan but I doubt it will make the laptop run any faster. I would clean it by blowing the air with the straw through the vents initialy if you are a computer hardware novice.

Then I would have a look at this post and run through the steps, I think you will have more joy in speeding up the laptop.

If you do go the route of removing the base to clean the laptop, then I suggest not trying to touch anything inside with your hands etc, if you give a static discharge it is possible to kill the laptop. Google ESD and ESD precautions and have a read.

jodav :)

Dust in a laptop would be more likely to cause heat issues as opposed to making it run slow. A slow down in performance is more likely caused by a normal degradation of the operating system (happens every system over time) & the installation of bloated applications such as the Norton's of this world. You can you the proper tools to remove the likes of Symantec's products or Ccleaner to tidy up everything else but if the slow down is really that noticeable? it's time for a re-install of the OS.

As for cleaning with a can of air? Nothing wrong with that either but there are two things I would fault the above video for

1. Always shake the can well before use and always spray a little into thin air before actually applying it to your laptop, it dissipates any moisture trapped at the top of the can, you don't want to bump any moisture into your beloved lappy ;)

2. Always secure all fans prior to spraying with compressed air, simply hold the fan with one finger so as it doesn't freewheel when hit with a powerful blast of air as it can break the fins and even damage the bearings.

If u want to see how bad the dust is in there get a hair dryer make sure its on cold and blow down the vents with it and dont have it turn on when u do it,but like others have said your lappy will be running slow for other reasons.
