Went to grab a cordless battery to recharge and it was tacky and possible leaky battery inside.

My query is say unit is 12v 2ah and i see a battery that says 12v 4ah could that work and charge from a previous lower rated one?

12v is 12v, the mah or ah is the capacity, eg a 4ah will hold twice as much as a 2ah.

Not sure what the rest of your question means, "charge from a previous lower rated one"
Do you mean will it power the device?
Or can you charge it with the same charger

So i could use a higher rated one and would last longer.

Maybe charging a bigger battery might take longer on the lower rated one charger.
I would assume as its still 12v but wondered if it could be lasting longer.

Dont worry about the amperage.

The higher ah will just mean your device will run longer using a 4ah as opposed to a 2ah.

Hmm cannot find any battery yet but went and opened it up and dry inside but casing damaged and no idea how.
Have it on charge and going to monitor it.
