Ditching Sky...need advice

Hi All
As the title states I'm ditching Sky (along with Netflix/Amazon/Disney etc.) and looking to go full IPTV
Now I have IPTV already but not that impressed so looking to turbo drive it all up
The IPTV is running on firebox with 500 Broadband using wired but obviously has wifi as well and Surfshark VPN
What I want is the best of all worlds as far as I can....
So ideally what I want is a box which will run IPTV Freeview catch ups apps etc. and record (if possible) and not looking at low end as will be saving cash so looking to spend on the best/better equipment
Already put feelers out on providers and looking to test some before I decide but want to get the infrastructure in place
So hit me with it guys but please remember I'm reasonably new to all this so may need some things explaining in baby terms lol

This is my experience, you're never going to get any iptv/provider/hardware combination that will be as good and as consistent as sky. I've got a shield, decent broadband, ethernet connected, tivimate, two different providers and i just couldn't go to bed leaving something recording and guarantee that it all goes perfectly fine. I've been around iptv for a good few years and cs before that and i've realised as good as it is, it's never going to match what you'd get from sky for £120 a month. Get a firestick 4k, get a sub, do your maintenance on the stick and you'll have a perfect experience 95% of the time. It's iptv, it's fantastic but it's never going to be perfect however much you throw at it.
Only my opinion tho!

I agree for the most part, you'll always fear that a recording might get corrupt, especially since it's usually over smb. This is why catchup is crucial for a full replacement. You don't need to schedule recordings and each show often has multiple airings. Only catch is that you will usually only have a few days to watch or download the program from catchup. Most of the matches and TV programs are available on stremio or torrent websites after a few hours but there is a learning curve so this would just be for those rare occasions but give you peace of mind.

If you watch a lot of VOD and you are ditching Netflix etc and I would suggest a service like Real Debrid or similar with a VOD app which I find is better than the VOD I have used with supplier’s.
But test the VOD from your supplier first and see if it suits your needs.

If you need all the official UK catchup apps on the device you will be very limited to what device you can buy.
Easier just to run those apps on your smart TV imo.

Agreed, no suppliers vod will be able to match debrid for any of the streaming services in terms of quality and size of library, it's just not feasible. I suppose people just want a one stop shop for everything.

never looked into RD as never been fully confident with what I'm doing ...what is the best app/player to use with RD?

Also as a little update have bitten the bullet and bought a Shield as Amazon had one 30% off on their day deal...also now have invested in Tivimate prem so slowly getting there as trialling a few suppliers now as well

I personally prefer Syncler but many use Stremio and it is free and it’s not a paid sub like the Syncler app.
There are threads on both on the forum and information on how to setup.
You will need a RD sub or similar for either app.
I use Trakt with the VOD apps I use as it keeps track of all the content I watch and new season releases and resumes where I left off.
You can create custom track lists and more.
Trakt integration on Syncler is better than Stremio imo.

As daft as it may seem some terrestrial channels (to keep wife happy) and cut out the adverts etc...but also some live games
Same position as you Re the wife - mine likes to record the soaps. I brought a BT you view box of CEX, think it was £80ish with warranty, has all catch up apps can record I think 3 channels at once, I also share a now tv for sky sports and discovery plus sub for TNT, pay around £20ish combined a month and the box has those apps. The con is I cannot record them and no sky sports UHD, the plus is I was paying £50ish previously for sky sports on Q with no TNT

Also have a shield which I use for my IPTV provider and have Real Debrid via streamio (insanely good)

Nothing will be perfect but for what I pay now I am very happy, especially now Sky are 2 year contracts

I and a few relatives have the BT YouView+ box’s and are great for recording Freeview.
I get them on eBay and keep one spare just case one of the relatives box goes down as the hard drives don’t last forever.
I am on my second box in about ten years.
I use the DTR-T2100 box’s
You do need an aerial but they have all the UK Freeview catchup apps but Ethernet only.

There is a 4K UHD version it’s for a BT 4k sub but would still work for Freeview SD HD recording.
