Dogs teeth cleaned

Guys a bit of advice needed please

In January this year I took my dogs for their annual booster and checkups. All was fine but the vet mentioned their teeth and that the next time she saw them they would possibly need a dental

She said their teeth were fine but just a little stained, and said its something to think about should I want it doing.
A few months have passed now and their teeth arnt getting any better, and I didnt want to risk their teeth going bad so I ring the vets up to enquire about a clean and polish

The receptionist asks if I was ever given a quote, I said no but they need doing so I didnt really care.

Well the receptioist came back with this quote £300 - 350 a dog, like jeez seriously!! (I have 2)
The receptionist said it was all to do with the anesphetic. My dogs are border collies not bloody elephants haha

Now Ive never ever had my dogs teeth cleaned, so I dont really know, does that price seem about right or have I just got myself an exspensive vet.

Their teeth need doing regardless but to be honest I never expected that price.

What do you think?

LOL, rip off mate. Do it yourself... Just make it a weekly thing and takes 5/10 mins of your time..
I would not pay someone to do it for me and not at that cost..
I have a English Springer & I clean my Dog's teeth regular, Well, the Wife does ;-)
Dog is OK with it and i think it enjoys it lol
Standard Tooth Brush and some dog tooth paste that you can get anywhere for pennies.. B&M etc sell it cheap.

Well I wasn't so cocky when I got off the phone that's for sure. Its like maybe they don't need them doing after all.

On a serious note tho, weve tried the whole toothbrush doing it ourselfs but they just wont let us. So its a case of if I don't do something then...

Just give them Dentasticks at night, as they help alot..
They will not put on weight giving them these to deal with there teeth on 3 day a week treat, and it helps with the Teeth.
Persist with the teeth brushing yourself, and eventually the dog gets used to it.
Use the Beef Tooth paste, as they like the taste or try another one, as maybe that's not the one the dug likes...

They were/are on dentastixs but I was told they don't work (this was from the vet) and it all depends on the dog and how they chew them.

Wish they had told me that before I bought bloody shares in the place tho haha

Will keep trying with the toothbrush but I think it will be a professional job in the end. 700 quid top end is rather taking the p*ss tho.
Like I said I had to ask as Ive never ever had to do it with any dog before

As mbull suggested give them Dentasticks daily as a wee treat or something similar along with possibly an occasional marrow bone from butchers. You've not mentioned what their daily feeds consists of whether its tinned meat or kibble etc. My last Lab never required his teeth to be cleaned by the Vet or by myself nor does my new Lab who's now 4 by feeding them Science Plan kibble (not cheap) and regular Dentasticks maybe their diet just needs a little tweaking etc.

Have a look at this mate below

The VET is needing to stop trying to Rake the ££ in here, I would goto another VET and get Advice etc, as i have found Vets to be soooo different on there ideas and Prices.
Do you have a Pets AT Home close by, I have found them to be Very good and Very well priced.. Have a look to see the closest and give them a call, was very happy with my local one and take my animals to them now.

it's a lot alright, it's becoming big business over here too, with 'dental specialists ' appearing at every practice. I have a springer too, teeth are cleaned regularly with a finger tooth brush & regular one. Acrylic bones are good too. virtually impossible to break , tho my lil bugger managed it, they help keep teeth & gums healthy by chewing action. I'm not keen on denta sticks, I'd heard there was a high amount of sugar, whether sugar or carbs that turn to sugar I don't know. The last springer I owned had to be sedated for his haircuts, the c*nt I bought him off, we later found he'd been 'docking' the dogs with a shears, & as such poor Sam was terrified when he saw scissors, when the vet sedated him , he'd give the teeth a good clean too, no extra charge.
It never ceases to amaze me, some vet practices are animal/owner based, they see we want to do the best by our pets, & help/charge accordingly. However there are some firmly gazing at dollar signs, they know we'll try our best for our pets & they do their best to extract every last penny from us.The knack is finding a decent vet

My dog's never needed any dental work.
I've never cleaned her teeth, nor does she have dentachews, here teeth are immaculate and she's 13.
My mate's Springer dog has had dental work done (same vet as me) and he had anesthesia, full clean and removal of three teeth, less than £200
next time he went he had 2 more teeth out, less than £200, including anesthesia.
So there are reasonably priced vets around, ring a few and get prices

Not much to add to this really apart from what we did was have a few teeth out and a clean whilst he was in for something else. I think a large part of the cost is the anesthetic so you save a lot not having that separately. If you give them a clean once a week I'm sure they'll be fine for a while.

£350 is a lot but it depends where you are based as well of course.

Thanks for the replies guys

My parents have had dogs from me being little and theve never ever cleaned any of their dogs teeth

I also have an older dog to hes 12 and his teeth are bang on, nothing wrong with them.
So I dunno with these two, possibly been spoilt with treats and the likes.
Dont get me wrong they are not that bad but when the vet mentioned it, its kind of made me a bit paronoid cos I dont want them hurting if I can prevent it happening.

Anyway Ive rang another vets, and I was given a quote of £180 a dog this is without extractions so it could cost a little more depending but I dont think they are at the stage of having to have teeth pulled out so......yeah big difference ay
She also mentioned plaque off, and some doggy mouthwash, as it all helps but said not to rush out buying just wait until I see the vet.

I have booked them in for monday to see the vet, so we will take it from there. Will let you know whats been said and how we get on

Thanks again

I agree with Mbull get some dentasticks and we use the plaque off on our French Mastiff and seems to work fine, don't pay any vet bills has they try to con you on anything these days.

Like ive said I have always used dentastixs only to be told they don't work. Never tried plaque off but its certainty worth a try.
Will just go vets and see whats said. The woman did say that there is a good chance they wont need anything doing. If they did then its 180 per dog. Which is a lot better than first quoted anyway but we will see if my current vet is just out to rip us off. Surely prices cant be that far apart

My advice would be to feed your dog raw food and give them raw (uncooked) bones to help clean their teeth or get an antler. Just keep an eye on them with raw bones to make sure they are not an excessive chewer. I feed my dog raw food which is minced muscle meat, offal and ground bones (sourced from a local supplier) best thing for them in my opinion!

Update guys

Just back from seeing the other vet, she said that one of my dogs would/could possibly benefit from having their teeth cleaned.
If I wanted to wait until September then there is an offer on that brings the price down from 180 to 140 quid
I haven't booked her in yet as the vet gave me a list of things to try. Plaque off, mouthwash, that dreaded toothbrush etc
Said to leave off the dentastixs as its kinda obvious they were not working for her.
Ive called at the pet shop and got some stuff and also an antler. Don't think that will work tho as they are just sat looking at them and them buggers cost me 11 quid each as well. But I can but try.
Oh yeah the other dog is fine so all in all I am happy what could of cost a small fortune as turned out well in the end. I can live with 140 quid if it comes to it.
better than 300-350 a dog as first quoted especially when only one needed doing anyway

:emoji_face_palm: sounds about right! I'd try rubbing something on them to get them going, mines obsessed with coconut oil used for cooking. Alternatively take them back for £22 and get some raw uncooked bones and stick them in the garden, bet they don't turn their noses up at them bad boys. You can often get them from butchers for nothing as well! Cooked chickens feet are also good for their joints and they have to chew them.

Just to clarify rub something on the antler, reading it back it sounds a little perverse!

3 dogs 3 antlers that should work shouldn't it?

Nope they all want the same one :) biatch fights!! oh the joys - but ay at least its a start
