England Captain Rio Ferdinand Injured

England captain Rio Ferdinand has been injured during training for the World Cup.

Ferdinand has been taken to hospital for a scan on his left knee.

The central defender suffered the injury during the final couple of minutes of training.

England manager Fabio Capello said he was uncertain at this stage of the severity of the injury.

But he confirmed: "Rio picked up a knee problem in training. It happened near the end.

"He has gone to hospital for a scan and we will have to see how things are."

Ferdinand had been optimistic of enjoying an injury-free World Cup after a season dogged by problems at Manchester United.

He was able to feature in barely a third of their Barclays Premier League campaign.

But he trained with no setbacks during England's two-week camp in Austria and also came through the friendly internationals with Mexico and Japan unscathed.

The news of Rio Ferdinand's injury is sure to send the English press into overdrive




Rio Ferdinand will miss the World Cup after picking up a knee injury in training on Friday.


The Guardian and Sky Sports both report that Ferdinand will miss the tournament amid increasing fears that he has suffered knee ligament damage.


Ferdinand went down in agony during a morning training session and was sent for a scan by manager Fabio Capello.



While The Football Association have still to make an official comment on the Manchester United defender's injury it is now all but certain that he has suffered a major injury.


Tottenham's Michael Dawson has been placed on stand-by and told not to go on his planned summer holiday, while Stephen Gerrard is now expected to captain England.
