Hi all, first post (need to download my manual!!).
A brief history - had Sky for donkey's years. Price went up, had 2 boxes and was paying over £50 a month so phoned them to cut a deal, they wouldn't agree to my demands so I cancelled and waited for them to phone me. They didn't and turned it off 30 days later. So in a huff I ordered a Humax HDR and I have been quite happy with this for 2/3 years. The rest of the family however were miffed to say the least so I have been downloading certain shows to keep them quiet - 24, Mad Men, Indy 500, Geordie Shore.....This has worked well and is cheap. We like cheap. OK, I went to see my mate up the street (Mr. Curb-side-motors) about a broken spring on my car and he shows me this 'new skybox'. It was small (looked like a media-player) but worked a treat so made some enquiries and I am now the proud owner of a new F5+12 months subs for £130. Seemed a good deal (the family are ecstatic) and I am chuffed but like to know how things work (at a basic level) so found this site and hopefully a few answers.
1. I take it this box is connected to a server that updates unlock codes on the fly (cline as I think it's callled)?
2. Is it really as simple as buying a box, loading firmware+channel list then putting in cline info (assuming I have setup an account)?
3. Sky Atlantic (for example) seems to break up regularly is this a sign of an oversubscribed server?
4. Half my street are on this (I am late to the party) surely Sky will do something soon, new card/encryption?
5. Cline info, is this basically an IP/webaddress with some sort of ID code?
6. The guy I got the box from knew what channel I was watching when I spoke to him, is he running the server and do I have any security worries on my home network with regards this access?
Sorry for the basic nature of my questions, I have read quite a few threads but they seem to be pitched slightly above my level so need to get up to speed. I have not dealt with anything like this since frigging my boy's PSP and NDS to play downloads. This site seems really helpfull and was just what I was looking for so hi to all again and thanks for your time.
