Old school: Ted Lowe recognised as one of the BBC greats

He retired after the 1996 World Championship final and died on the morning of this year's final in Sheffield, in which Judd Trump will meet John Higgins.

Lowe had been in a hospice for about a week after a 10-week illness, but followed this year's championships closely.

John Virgo knew Lowe for many years, from his own time as a player and then as a co-commentator to the man known as 'Whispering Ted'.

"He set a standard for us all," Virgo said. "I commentated with him and he was wonderful.

"He had an impish sense of humour and while cricket had its John Arlott, Wimbledon had its Dan Maskell, we had Ted Lowe.
