Hard drive issue

Hi Guys

I brought a 500gb WD My Passport to use in my zgemma box, was formatted before use to ntfs and appeared fine.
I went through the Wooshbuild v5 setup and on the 3rd attempt, it fully flashed (before i was getting various flashing errors)
Once it was fully setup, the USB cam importer was not working with another formatted stick. I had to copy over the line via network.
After this, the setup was completely fine i.e pause, rewind and record.
But then i got a random timeshift fail message after every channel change.
Unable to initialize due to use error despite disabling pause, rewind and record.
I connected the hard drive to my computer but it was only showing on devices and printers.
Disk management and list disk showed it so i used partition wizard to blank it and try again.
However during the flash it failed, regarding opening the folders it created during the initialization.
At this point Disk management and list disk showed it at 0gb and the hard drive itself was making a prolonged noise when plugged in.
I have given up on it and just used a small USB stick for now and my zgemma is fully running.
Interestingly, the USB cam importer worked absolutely fine as well.

The question i have, is the hard drive completely hopeless ?

I appreciate this is a long post, so apologies in advance (i tried my best to shorten)

Sounds like you got a faulty drive. I would return it to where u got it from for a replacement

Is the drive powered from the Usb port ? Sounds like you've exceeded the port power supply. This would cause erratic read write behaviour.

First thing to check is that the drive is mounted as media/hdd

Red button -> Plugins -> Mount manager - check the drive is mounted as media/hdd, if not press the green button to change it.

Are you using two USB devices? if so, the box will sometimes decide what is what on boot which is a pain if it swaps them around.

If using 2 USB's, only use the HDD for the time being and ensure it is set to media/hdd. If the problem still occurs, try the drive in the front USB port - again, set the mount to media/hdd. If you still have problems, try using a normal USB stick in it's place, but you do need to initialise.

Quick update
First of all i appreciate the responses.

Plugging the hard drive into a computer and the box doesn't recognise it at all.

The spinning has gotten worse and only stops when in standby mode.

I am seeking a refund at the moment

But the good news is i had a spare 250gb laptop drive and have that fully setup, so all is not lost

Cheers
