Lots of different options based on your budget, from simple cameras with an sd card (similar in theory to a dash cam) through to a set up that records to a hard drive.

The only difference really is that you cant access it remotely.

Your budget will aim you in the right direction, if you say what your budget is, and what you need from it (IR for recording in low light, one/two/more cameras, what resolution you want, etc.) We can point you towards it.

Something like a pet cam. It wont be used for live viewing. More so if there is an incident in the house we can take memory card and watch back on laptop. Incident with a past carer for an elderly grandparent. Up to £50.

Does it need to be hidden? Or can it be overt?

If overt, something like what Stuss suggests could work, any dashcam that is cheap enough could be used.

Things like trail cams do what your after..they are battery operated-motion triggered-have infrared night viewing -and only record to SD cards and can be viewed on mini screen on camera or using sad card on laptop or tablet etc.
