Insurance advice please

Hi all,

I have a Mac M1 that’s been working fine, but I was watching it while making food and it dropped off the worktop into the sink. The sink was empty, so I took it out and put it back. About 30 minutes later the screen started going funny — a few flickers and then a black screen. I’ve managed to boot it and get in via HDMI out, so I got my files, but the machine is pretty fckd!

This has happened right in the middle of a month‑long project, and it was going well too. Anyway, to cut a long story short:

I’ve got home and contents insurance with full accidental damage, and I paid for cover for accidental damage, including on holidays etc. I think it’s with Saga. If I say it’s just water damage on the screen, will they send it for repair? I don’t fancy waiting long as I need to crack on with my work. I’m tempted to drop it on the tile floor to finish it off tbh, as I don’t fancy a “send it off” situation. Am I better off saying it dropped into a full sink so it’s a write‑off, and then pay the excess and get a replacement?

Is it worth the excess? Price increase on premium, etc?

If the cost of parts and labor for repair is higher than the value of a new or refurbished replacement unit then the insurers will determine it to be beyond economical repair.

If you do decide to claim - make sure you've read the full terms and conditions cos if they can find a reason to decline the claim - they will!

I've had a couple of phones replaced by the Halifax buildings insurance. I told them I dropped one in the lake while fishing,in case they asked for it. Another one got pinched by a brass, off me lad while in Barcelona on the stadium tour. Both phones were replaced with ,brand new phones within 24 hours. Excellent service

That sounds a bit promising, did your premium go up a lot the next year?

This is the first time I would have claimed, so I’ve been lucky up to now. I looked at the excess and it’s £250, and it’s a Mac M1 Pro which was £1400 new. Even now they’re £700 new, and considering it’s 5–6 years old, it’s worth claiming, as £250 wouldn’t get me anything close.

Mine was in with the price of my bank account,so didn't go up. There was £100 pound excess on both claims. But phone price at the time ,was about 600 notes. So well happy.
😁 Just in case you get the wrong idea, ive never had a motor claim in 50 years. And minimal building claims ,in the same period 🚔🚨😂

its a high value item, you've paid for accidental damage, why not use it, just explain what happened it'll either get replaced or repaired,

But you'll lose your NCB and you've gotta pay the first 250 wing-wangs of the claim, meaning they're only going to give you 450, it'll probably cost you more than that in premiums over next few years.
BTW, you dont get to say it's water damage on the screen, they tell you, - after it's been inspected by someone they appoint. This isn't their first claim, it might be yours but they do this daily.

Opinions were pretty much split 50/50, but given the cost of tech these days, I decided to go ahead with the claim. I’ve ended up with a MacBook Pro 14" (M5, 1TB SSD), and it only cost me £240 excess. It’s an absolute beast of a machine and should easily see me through the next five years, so I’m really pleased with it.

I’m expecting a bump in my premium, of course, but for a £1700 laptop, it feels like a fair trade-off.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
