i am new to all this and only wanted it mainly for family and friends and to be able to gain confidence and knowledge on it

If you don't know what your doing you have got a steep learning curve.
You can either go the xtream editor way (had a quick look at it and got bored very quickly, probably as my attention span is crap) or you can learn how to write the scripts, create the bouquets properly with the correct service codes and make your own xmltv epg grabs so you can use either crossepg or EPG importer.
As I said a steep learning curve ;)

Yeh that is a steep learning curve lol think i will find a supplier with one already lol

Xtream Editor is quite complicated when you first use it, but it's actually pretty simple when you get the hang of it. You sort your channels as you want them on the panel and it's all downloaded to each box you've got linked to it at a time of your choosing. When channels change (which they do!) you simply slot those in where you want them, tweak the channel name if necessary and give it an EPG ID. It's not a lot of work once you have your initial EPG template set up. If you're lucky, your supplier might even have a template that can be shared with you.

I tried one script, but I couldn't see how it would be of use in the instances where channels get changed, and you are responsible for boxes belonging to others. Can these be automated and their output manipulated like Xtream Editor does?

Liam and wedge,Best way to do it is by learning,Ok to say get a provider with a script but that is crap as you can get epg a few ways,Making a few mistakes is part of learning,Resellers popping up every where going with no know how to set things up,Best wishes to both but please try new stuff,I am an old war horse and love it
