Katie Taylor is bidding for a fourth consecutive World gold in Qinhuangdao

Katie Taylor is through to the quarter-finals of the lightweight division at the World Boxing Championships in China.

She produced another high-class performance, stopping Saida Khassenova from Kazakhstan in the fourth round.

The powerful Khassenova caught Taylor with a superb shot in the early stages of the bout, but the Bray boxer kept her composure and a number of speedy combinations ensured she held an 8-3 lead at the end of the opening round.

Taylor stretched that advantage to 13-6 at the end of the second round.

The 25-year-old’s superior movement came to the fore in the penultimate round, and allied to some superb jabbing, she moved into a 20-6 lead.

Khassenova took three standing counts in the final round and the referee ended the contest.

Taylor will have to wait at least another day to secure Olympic qualification as six European fighters have advanced to the quarter-finals, with just three Olympics slots up for grabs.

The Irish lightweight faces Romania’s Mihaela Lacatus at 8am Irish time on Wednesday.

The possibility of four European boxers in the semi-finals muddies the water with regards to Olympic qualification.

There is one extra European place available through International Olympic Committee's Tripartite Commission which could be used to send all four fighters to London, but it remains unclear as to whether or not the much-coveted wildcard will be used in this manner.
