hi i am looking at getting a new laptop in the near future and wondering what specs etc i should be trying to get? i will only be using it for day to do general stuff and nothing too major.

If you can get a 8th gen intel laptop. They're 6 core and will future proof you for abit. With more than enough power for your needs.

i have been looking into laptops for a while, last week i did finally get one, bit expensive but worth it, from john lewis, Aser swift 3 with intel optane memory, fast as hell, it was £650 though.
