Heineken Cup champions Leinster have appointed New Zealand's Josef Schmidt as their new head coach from next season.

The 44-year-old is currently assistant coach at French club Clermont Auvergne and has signed a three-year deal to take over when Michael Cheika leaves the provincial side.

Cheika had previously announced he would not renew his contract with Leinster after five years.

Schmidt has been backs coach in Clermont along with fellow New Zealander Vern Cotter and helped steer the French club to three successive French championship finals.

Schmidt has also coached the Auckland Blues in the Super 14 and Bay of Plenty to win the Ranfurly Shield, as well as spending a year in Ireland as a player in the early 1990's, playing for the minor Leinster-based club Mullingar.
