Microsoft Windows 8 Production Activation Keys To Come Embedded In BIOS

From now onward any PC that comes preloaded with Windows 8 will have its product keys embedded in the system’s BIOS. Product keys will no longer be printed on a sticker on the outside of the machine as has always been the case. This change was confirmed by Microsoft in its ‘Microsoft Answers’ website.

One of the improvements Microsoft is making to Activation 3.0 for newly built machines that come preloaded with Windows 8, you won’t have a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker attached to the machine anymore. Instead, this will be embedded in the BIOS. This will avoid product keys from being compromised and OEMs will buy what they need,” was the answer to an user query. This particular user was unable to find the “product key sticker” on his newly purchased Samsung Windows 8 laptop and hence popped the question.

While this new anti piracy strategy by Microsoft might come in handy in preventing the theft of Windows 8 product activation keys in some cases, it also has its own set of cons. For example, say you need to install Windows 8 on a new PC since the old one is fried, but since the product key is embedded in the PC that is broken down there is no way you could recover it (unless you had noted it down previously). Another scenario would be when you have a separately purchased copy of a higher version of Windows 8 than the one installed on the PC. Will the PC accept the new Windows 8 and the new product activation key? Would it provide an option for you to enter a separate set of product activation key?

Answers to those questions might not have have been properly answered by Microsoft yet. However, the new system also means that you no longer have to worry about losing the product activation key, by the way of a torn sticker or a faded print.
