the Newcamd.list is a file which contains your Line normally an N: for cable, this line connects your receiver to an outside server which in layman's terms opens the channels for you.
If your provider has issued you with an N; line then entering it into newcamd.list would go something like this

So I need to purchase a line? Are there different ones for vm and sky? I am reading the need to be installed on box via ftp?

Yes you need to purchase a Sly or Virmin line (or both if you want)
FTP: There are a number of software programs that you install on your PC in order to log on to your box and transfer(FTP File transfer protocol) your line details into a certain file on your box.
