What's new

no softcam manager

hi everyone installed the new softcam universal feed from the resources on here to try new cams, after installing this i no longer have softcam manager on my box to restart cam and switch cams? it says it can be located in decryption parental control, i dont have decryption and parental control is just blank?

can someone help me get it back thanks

Which exact image do you have?
OpenATV 6. what
What image date is the image?

May I also suggest you use the stock skin (metrix HD) until your cam issues are sorted out. Some skins are not updated and people have been complaining about OpenATV, when it is actually their skin that has yet to be updated

Softcam manager is gone. Forget about it.

You should have softrcam setup now if you have a cam (from the secret feed installed). If you have installed a cam from a different place, then say so as that may be the problem. Post a screenshot of what you see. Please say all the steps that you did. Be explicit in your description so that if you missed a step or did something differently, people can advise.

I followed the steps in you guide copied the text into openwebif when to plugin downloaded mgcam1.45 cam starts and working. Went to go to softcam manager no longer there looked for the decryption menu but couldnt find it.

I downloaded the cam from softcam list in plugins. I had softcam manager until i installed this tonight i only installed this to test other cams as i was getting issues with glitching. Is there anyway to get softcam manager back? As i am not able to see which cam i am running

Please forget softcam manager. It is gone. You will be in vicious circle if you try and look for something that does not exist any more.

Put the skin back to Metrix Hd. You can change it back later. I presume you restarted the receiver already.

Menu > Information > About
When was it last updated? Post a screenshot please.

What do you see if you press the red button while in TV mode, i.e no menus showing. Post a screenshot please.

What do you see if you press/select
Menu > Setup > Decryption and parental control
Post a screenshot please.

For future reference I suspect you installed the feeds ipk but then not installed any cams in which case the softcam setup option will not appear.

As you have found out, grogbuild has the latest feeds installed

I installed the cam but for some reason my box wasnt finding it . Should have just flashed from the start . Works a treat now bar an area fault causing pixelation on sky sports news which had me worried at first typical cheers for the helps lads as always

The softcams on the feed server are for new coding. He did not perform a software update since end of March, so did not have new code.

This is why I asked the image date.

Anyway, he's got there in the end.

I have added the following sentence to the resource for benefit of others in similar situation

The softcam control methods in OpenATV changed. If you have an image that is older than 03 May 2019, update or flash a newer one first.

you can't blame the skins when the problem is actually down to OpenATV rather than skin authors, major changes should be carried out on a beta version of ATV (6.3) and released in the NEXT stable release, existing stable release should not have such major changes made. If ATV has stuck to the standard process then there would be no issue and it would give skin authors time to make necessary changes ready for the next stable release.

I am not blaming, just pointing out where issue is.

What is the standard process?

Refuse to have skins on a repository where they can be updated as part of build process?
Force downgrading of system files?
Bitch and moan and be abusive instead of highlight issues that need addressing and work in collaboratively?

Some other skins who do not follow the above "standard process" have been adapted.
And actually, OpenATV have made themselves standard. They now use the same config locations as other images. And they will be using the same cams as PLi and most other images.

It is preposterous to hold images back because of skins. Just like translations.

OpenATV were forced to update their feed server and because Vodafone locked access to the country hosting the old feeds. Yes it would have been better to keep 6.2 as it was and make changes in 6.3. However that then creates a problem of having to have two types of softcams and also the migration process. They allowed about a month before dropping the softcam manager after the changes started.

Older boxes are incapable of running HD skins, so they choose a lo-res skin and this is where the trouble starts

Resolution doesn't matter, they can be updated. If the skins are on GitHub, please say the names and they can be adapted.

Just to clarify, the issue only arises if the screen is skinned in the skin. If it isn't, the emergency/default skin is used for that screen. Yes, there was a delay in updating the emergency/default skin. The one embedded in the python file is used if not in active skin or emergency/default skin. The embedded one did not show everything, but this is being corrected.

by 'standard process' I mean make changes to the beta version and leaving the stable version alone until a point where the beta is ready to become the new stable. It's standard with any software development. The old softcam manager would remain on 6.2 and the new would be on 6.3. If you don't then what is the point of running a beta ?

Why skins are not on a repository I don't know, but it's odd to expect skins to be ready for changes made with no warning, and then say the problem is because they have not been updated.

I appreciate that the issues they experienced with the feed server but I would assume they would have a backup of 6.2 that they could have restored and still kept it seperate from 6.3

I was a perl developer so understand the hassles involved, in I way though I was fortunate that I didn't have the user base ATV have so if there was issues with servers I was not under so much preasue to sort it quickly.

OpenATV have a Developer branch. They are not UK based. They certainly don't have a make my receiver look like a Sky UK/Virgin receiver agenda. Nor would they hinder their enhancements because skins that are not part of the "standard" E2 community.

The skins are made to fit the image changes, not the other way around. The skins need to be adapted. Sadly, it is far easier to abuse the image teams instead of updating skins.

E2 teams won't stop nor wait for skinners. No matter how talented they are. OpenATV are probably the only team that does daily builds. It would have been a one day delay for changes to be included if the skins were part of the normal E2 community. As was done with other skins.
