PC full up but dont know what with or how it can get full up so quick

Bought my son a 320gb pc for xmas - already its saying its almost full up. How i do not know. Before he only had a 60gb pc and even that was not half full.
This has 2 drives the C drive and the D DATA drive. both seem to hold 141gb but one has 40gb left and the other 39gb left. 2 x 141 does not equal 320 - so have no idea where the other 60gb has gone.

How can that be if he doesnt have much on it - well a lot of music oh and it seems to back up his pc but even that surely should not take up that much room. Even my pc is 1TB and i have only used less than 100gb on my C drive and 0 on my D DATA drive. ok i do also have a 1TB external hard drive but even that is only less than half full and i have all my files etc on that.
can anyone explain how this may be full up or how i can go about showing you guys so you can help me understand what is taking up all the room. would it be anything to do with it backing up the pc - does it store each back up separately and thats why its full up or when it back up should it just add to the files.
cheers
Linny :)

ps wont be around much between now and tuesday so no rush guys!

if a back up takes 1GB for instance and you have 30, then thats 30GB(simple i hear you say) if the backups aren't going on top of one another and only adding the new bits, then the file will just keep getting bigger and bigger. the memory that any device has is never what it says on the packaging, for instance a 2GB sd card only holds1.86GB. hope this little bit of info helps, i am sure that there are others who will give you more specific info
