does anyone have a good starter guide or faq links about using an old sky q satelite dish and whats possible ie freesat/iptv or other things ahem . i've heard viark boxes mentioned but have no idea what they do very much a newbie in this discussion.

No worries, gadgetuk, I’d be interested in that too. Got my new Octagon Sf 8008 V3 supreme twin today, working straight away with a Vix install. The EPG looks a bit dated, but records and pauses live TV great & I presume there is lots of custom options. Found it odd, it won’t record a series like my old Humax box can, but that’s a dedicated Freesat box. I worked out some things just work differently on a proper E2 sat box; it’s quite easy to set up an auto timer to record multiple episodes. Will be searching the forums for recommendations for alternative setups.

Octagon will be fine mate. :)
I think the record on an e2 box works better than an app, as if it freezes or buffers on the app, it tends to stop recording, but with the e2 it carries on. :)

That looks amazing! How do I get it to look like that? I presume that’s clever satellite setup, not something I’ll achieve with my standard Sly dish? Or is that a mix of satellite &IPTV? So much to learn..

For many years I used Jedi Maker Xtream (now replaced by BMX) for live tv, but now i use e-channelizer for live (due to ability to easy edit and assign multiple epg sources) and then Xtreamity for catchup and vod

Have found e-channeliser ( do I need the premium version ?) & Xtremity , any tips ? Can’t wait to check this all out. Super excited.

Lol, no not clever (I'm an idiot)
I'm using OpenATV image, and thats one of the skins. It's a mix of IPTV and Terrestrial (used to have Satellite as well till my dish fell apart lol)

Because normally they do not work just out the box .

You can buy without firmware factory default or they will install image of your choice.
but when those images boot then you have to set everything up youself.

Personally if a new user I think for a few pounds more that is good freesat setup for you. So yes you have made backup good move.
And you can always try installing other images on other slots and learn how to set things up yourself.

lol Thanks for the reply Urie, yep plugged it in & it worked straight away, had to tweak a few things like picture resolution & set a temp test HD, going to put an M.2 stick in it and play around with an ATV setup as an alternate boot. At least that’s the plan ..

Yes and that is one thing that confuses me why that suppler only advertises external usb hard drives for recording on that device and not M2 as a choice at least then you would expect to have a compatible one.

Because this seems to be a problem for people buying wrong PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD or are there still problems with these devices and that is why they prefer just to advertise external usb hard drive.
Because they are reputablel company.

Just realised I should have asked you more about what E2 box you have & how to set it up for a mixture of Sat & iptv. I can swap the new Octagon if you think there is a better alternative, just the spec of 1gb of Ram in it, that seems small . Would really appreciate any pointers of apps & install guides.

Should you not be using /etc/enigma2/AutoBouquetsMaker/custom folder as that is backed up when you do settings backup. And even ABMCustomMixImporter stores its files there.
