Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says

Samsung has advised owners of its latest TVs to run regular virus scans.

A how-to video on the Samsung Support USA Twitter account demonstrates the more than a dozen remote-control button presses required to access the sub-menu needed to activate the check.

It suggested users should carry out the process "every few weeks" to "prevent malicious software attacks".

The suggestion surprised cyber-security specialists, who said the public would be unlikely to go to the trouble.

BBC News asked Samsung whether any specific threat had prompted the warning

I came across this thread while I was looking for other Samsung Smart TV owners. If I could just advise anyone who is in the process of buying one, I would caution you to think very long and hard before doing so. Mine is a UE49MU6400 and on the face of it has fairly good quality picture. But if you are hoping to record anything on it forget it.

Firstly you have to be home when you do so as it cannot record when you are out as the timer doesn't work in standby mode as the usb port has no power when in this mode. Then it is the case that even when you are in the chances of it recording are very hit and mostly miss. You then have the BBC 1 lotto chance of recording as it puts up a screen to ask if you want BBC 1 HD or SD, which if you don't choose decides to record nothing.

Finally I come to Samsung customer service. Which is non existent. Apart from the fact when I contacted them told me the best solution was to buy a new Samsung Digital Freeview recording box. Needless to say I kindly told them where to put their new box.
