I want to heat water and charge 12V lead-acid batteries using solar power. Apart from the actual solar panels, I intend to make everything else myself. Living in South Africa, there is abundant sun.
The initial design exercise will be for my own use, but I want to fine-tune the concept and get the costs down as low as possible with a view to being able to supply kits or know-how to the rural people of this country who live in abject poverty with no services to speak of.
Has anyone here attempted anything like this? If so, what pitfalls were encountered? And, most importantly - were you successful?
