The warm weather, World Cup and Wimbledon signal a great weekend for consumers - and big profits for supermarkets.

The weather is forecast to be ideal for barbeques and picnics

With major tennis and football matches coinciding with the warmest weekend of the year, supermarkets are preparing for one of their busiest weekends.

Britain's biggest retailer, Tesco, told Sky News Online it is expecting to sell nine million fresh sausages and nearly 1.5 million tubs of cream this weekend.

In preparation for the sizzling weekend, the supermarket has promotions on strawberries, picnicware and, for Wimbledon-inspired customers, tennis racquets as well.

Asda’s curry homage to Wayne Rooney, the Vinda-roo, has already seen sales double as footie fans rushed to support England’s star player.

Up-market chain, Waitrose, saw sales jump to £97.3m last week driven by the World Cup.

Company spokesperson Karla Graves told Sky News Online: "As shoppers stock up for the weekend we have already seen tortilla chip sales shoot up by 70%, dips up 60% and sharing crisp tubes by a massive 368%."

Even those not interested in the football have enjoyed some perks.

"Following Wednesday's match and with a sport packed weekend ahead, football fans have been spoiling their WAGS with flowers," she said.

Television sales across the country shot up in the run-up to the World Cup which has been on for two weeks so far.

More than 30 million viewers in England are expected to watch the nation's match against Germany on Sunday.
